The Saint Josephs College mens and womens tennis teams finished the fall season
with a pair of 8~1 wins against Calumet College of Saint Josephs at the SJC
Invitational in the Hanson Recreation Center on Saturday. The match was originally
planned as a doubleheader, but rain forced the match inside. With 18 matches to be
played on three courts, the coaches agreed to a shortened eight game set format to
complete at least one match.
SJC (5~0) remained perfect during the fall portion of the season. Recording wins and
remaining unbeaten in singles play were number one Katee Sanderson (Fr., Wheatfield,
Ind./Michigan City) 8~0, number two Heather Esker (Fr., Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) 8
~0, number three Jordan Orner (Sr., Avon, Ind./Avon) 7~0, number four Anisha Gohil
(Sr., Kokomo, Ind./Taylor) 8~0, and number six Sam Busch (So., Clarendon Hills, Ill./
Nazarene) 8-0.
Kara Paroubek (Fr., De Pere, Wis./De Pere) was the only player to play both positions
Saturday (number five singles and number one doubles) and provided two solid wins
for the Pumas. The Pumas used every eligible player on the roster, providing three
new combinations in doubles that turned into two of three doubles wins for SJC.
Combining their dual match wins with the Upper Iowa tournament, the Lady Pumas
are a dominating 64-12 overall in individual matches.
The mens team evened their overall record to 2~2 with an 8~1 win over CCSJ. The
Pumas were led once again by Ishan Gohil (Jr., Kokomo, Ind./Taylor) scoring a pair
of wins at number one singles and number one doubles with Tanner Braden. Gohil
leads the mens team with four singles wins on the season.
Seeing his first action of the season, Matt Williams (So., Hobart, Ind./Hobart) fired
six aces, teaming with Miguel Belcina (Jr., Windsor, Ontario/Holy Names) for a win
at number three doubles. Also seeing his first action for the Pumas was Michael
Prather (Sr., Highland, Ind./Highland), who proved worthy with an 8~1 victory
over Kyle Kocsis. www.bellbestpuma.com
